As same-sex marriage protections pass Congress, House GOP support decreases

Thirty-nine House Republicans supported a bill providing federal protections for same-sex and interracial marriage, a drop in GOP support compared to when similar legislation came before the chamber earlier this year.

In July, 47 House Republicans supported the bill, though some GOP leaders who voted for it faced backlash within the conference. The Senate then incorporated additional language aimed at shoring up religious liberty protections before passing the legislation 61-36 last week.

The measure passed the House 258-169, with one member voting present. It now heads to President Joe Biden’s desk.
