Smith nominated to be the Marines’ top officer

The move comes amid a larger shakeup within the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as several officers face the end of their terms.

On Thursday, President Joe Biden nominated the Air Force’s top officer, Gen. C.Q. Brown, to be the next Joint Chiefs chair. If confirmed, he would replace Gen. Mark Milley.

The move means the White House now must choose a new Air Force chief of staff.

Last month, Gen. Randy George, the Army’s vice chief of staff, was tapped to replace Gen. James McConville as the Army’s top officer. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday is also facing the end of his term. His successor has not yet been nominated.
